Yellow treehouse

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Thanks to Stefan at Isobar for this one.

The yellow pages in New Zeeland decided to build a super cool (elf-ish) restaurant up in a tree, using only companies they could find in the Yellow Pages. It’s a great way to show the value of both being listed on the YP as well as using them. The restaurant seems to be a success, since they’re completely booked until the end of the season.

I think we will see lots more advertising along these lines in the future. Where entertainment and advertising converge.

Check out the website of it at yellowtreehouse.co.nz (which is both simple and beautiful).

Creativity techniques

Friday, January 30th, 2009

A great compilation of techniques for creativity and innovation. Certainly lots of interesting stuff in there. (despite the butt ugly wiki-style design)

This is a general category of Creativity and Innovation Techniques, simply listed in alphabetical order. Like most tools these creativity techniques all have their good and bad points. I like to think of these creativity techniques as tools in a toolbox in much the same way as my toolbox at home for DIY. It has a saw, spanner, hammer, knife and all sorts of other things in it, they are all very useful, but you have to pick the right tool (creativity technique) for each job. We will try and provide a little guidance along with each tool to let you know whether it’s best used for cutting paper or putting in nails.

Wonderful idea, the execution could use some more polish. But it’s still damn nice.

I love you more than a geek loves his computer

Lego makes use of augmented reality

Monday, January 26th, 2009

This is the first time I’ve come across a really well thought thru use of augmented reality (click for a good explanation). The mobile phone apps + postcards and related ways of using it doesn’t really get anywhere longer than - well it’s a cool technology. Legos approach is both cool (as in 3D stuff magically appearing) and useful, you can get a so much better preview of what you are doing.

Now imagine if they made an application for your phone or computer, to make the building instructions in 3D. Cool and really neat when the instructions are hard to follow. You could even have them animated with no problem.

Back in São Paulo

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Since I’m a part of farfar academy I’m just about to start my second trainee period. I will be spending three more months in São Paulo at Agência Click, and maybe in some other Isobar projects as well. But I don’t know anything about that yet.

So today I landed in Brazil, went through the worlds slowest passport control and the most unorganized customs line ever. That aside everything went really smooth and it’s just so incredibly nice to be back here in São Paulo. The 27°C is quite a contrast to +2, rain and wind.

This blog will edge a bit towards advertising and related subjects from now on. And there’s some stuff happening to our farfar academy site as well, probably tomorrow.

That was unexpected

But what a way to start out. I’m impressed. USA 2.0? (Ok, that might be a tad worn, but still…)

The new president effectively reversed a post-9/11 Bush administration policy making it easier for government agencies to deny requests for records under the Freedom of Information Act, and effectively repealed a Bush executive order that allowed former presidents or their heirs to claim executive privilege in an effort to keep records secret.

To me this seems like a really strong message that something is actually changing. A real effort for transparency and honesty. More of a grown up way to rule a country.

It will be very interesting to see what happens with this.
