Installing OS X without being booted from the DVD

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I needed to install os x on a new drive (I’m replacing my 250GB drive with a 500GB one). Not wanting to be without the computer during the entire install process, I dug around in the install disc for the actual installer package. And sure enough, works perfectly fine.

So to do this, I just

  • popped my new drive into a SATA enclosure/dock
  • ran open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/ in a terminal window
  • Doubleclicked OSInstall.mpkg
  • Followed the installer

Mind boggling

This is just so stupid.

MPAA shows how to videorecord a TV set from timothy vollmer on Vimeo.

The description from Vimeo:

At the DMCA 1201 hearings at the Copyright Office at the Library of Congress, representatives from the MPAA showed a video demonstrating how users can videorecord a TV set. They argue this is an acceptable analog alternative to breaking copy protection on a DVD.

The hearings occur every three years to determine whether the Librarian at the Library of Congress (through direction of the Copyright Office) should create exemptions to the anti-circumvention provisions in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

In 2006, film and media professors were granted an exemption in order to break copy protection on DVDs so that they could utilize high quality video clips in classroom teaching. Up for consideration during the 2009 exemption hearings is whether this exemption should be extended to apply to faculty teaching in all disciplines, and whether the exemption should apply to students.

Mc Donalds billboard interactions

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

This is just so clever. It would’ve been a a few years ago as well, but I doubt it would’ve gotten even close the same spread. what’s nice about it is that it also is with fairly simple technology (a movie on a billboard).

RIP a remix manifesto, version 1 now online

Friday, May 8th, 2009

The documentary RIP: A remix manifesto which makes the point that the copyright laws are outdated when the technological tools have been democratized, almost anyone can get the tools to create.

I’ve been waiting for it to come online, and now it is. The first version that is, if you want to help out and add something to the movie, you can. Just head over to Open Source Cinema or ccmixter if you want to make things for the soundtrack. Eventually a 2.0 version will be released, refined by others. Really cool.

The movie is presented in chapters, which you can watch here.

Embedded here is chapter three.

And on the subject of mashing up, as a bonus to this post, here’s one I made.
[Empire Of The Sun - We are the people (The Golden filter remix) + White stripes - Seven Nation Army (Rip It Off Acid Mix)]

Lawrence Lessig is trying to change the congress

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009
By creating a donors strike organized from his site Change Congress.

Change congress is calling a donor strike!

Special interests pump millions of dollars into elections, giving them more influence over our political system than the rest of us. Can you be part of the solution?

He’s using a lot of social web platforms to push this thing, check out this list…  TWITTER, FLICKR, MYSPACE, BLIP, YOUTUBE, FACEBOOK APP and FACEBOOK.
Pretty cool initiative, hope he manages to bring some real change. I wish him the best of luck.

Google Voice: Coming soon

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Google Voice is a service that gives you one number for all your phones, voicemail that is easy as email, and many enhanced calling features like call blocking and screening, voicemail transcripts, call conferencing, international calls, and more.
Google Voice is currently available for GrandCentral users only, but will be open to new users soon. In the meantime, please leave us your email address and we’ll notify you as soon as Google Voice becomes available. To learn more about Google Voice, check out our feature videos.

I really really want this (I hope it doesn’t end up being a US only service). Such a neat solution. Voicemail transcripts, call recordings, call routing (you can have several phones on one number), and a web interface to keep track of it all.

I’m not a super heavy user of my phone (for calls/sms that is) but I could imagine this being like heaven for someone that does a lot of business via their phone.

See more of it at the google voice site.

MC TXT

mc txt

Folklore, Baldi, NYC (aka Never Yet Contested) and Rick Vindaloo, with the support of technological ringmaster Paul Notzold, comprise hip hop act MC TXT. By encouraging the audience to send text messages to a large screen on stage, these mobile-minded emcees floss their freestyle skills by weaving the messages into their rhymes. The result is a uniquely interactive, jaw-droppingly seamless set that signals a new approach to live hip hop.

Interesting way to make a show more interactive.

If you ever thought of making a typeface

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

You’d consider this good news indeed.

Adobe Font Development Kit for OpenType package is to share the tools used by Adobe font developers for wrapping up PostScript fonts as OpenType/CFF font files, and adding OpenType layout features. These tools are used for in-house development of new Adobe OpenType fonts.
