Solid state

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Samsung made this nice little video (Viral even) which shows how much of a bottleneck a traditional harddrive can be. Thou they do stripe the disks for even more super fast access. (Hardrive performance isn’t my strongest point, but I’m guessing you could achieve similar throughput speeds by striping regular disks as well (but with longer seek times)). 2GB/sec is either way pretty insane.

And the result: you can open all apps in the office suite in .5 second.

Via Cat, who sent me the link for the video.

A different take on news design

NYTimes seems to be doing a lot of interesting things lately. One being opening up a search API for all the articles, another being this different layout for skimming the articles

Their reference function is also pretty neat. Mark a word or a phrase…

NYTimes reference func 1Click the question mark and you’ll get a popup with a search for the word.

Massive storage solution?

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

I’m pretty sure that last time I saw this one it wasn’t in production yet. Now it’s available at ThinkGeek: External USB SATA Drive Dock. With a list price of 49$ it’s a cheap solution to get massive amounts of storage.

Since I tend to collect huge amounts of image files (I can shoot 4-6GB on one session), I need storage and backup. This solution makes it easy enough to maintain both the photo files and offsite backups at a reasonable price point considering the photography isn’t more than a hobby for me.

A recycled desktop computer casing

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Simply so much more beautiful than the normal plastic pc crap. Apparently heat isn’t an issue either since the cardboard makes it well ventilated. I almost want one despite the fact that it’s not a mac.

Nicolas Nova

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Nicolas Nova is a user experience researcher and runs a really interesting blog. In his own words:

My work is about studying how people use various technologies and turn them into insights, ideas, prototypes or recommendations to inform design and foresight. This blog is to selection of the material that I collect, especially in fields such as mobility, urban environments, digital entertainment and new interfaces.

The image is from his blog and shows a door handle re-factored into a mailbox.

Lego makes use of augmented reality

Monday, January 26th, 2009

This is the first time I’ve come across a really well thought thru use of augmented reality (click for a good explanation). The mobile phone apps + postcards and related ways of using it doesn’t really get anywhere longer than - well it’s a cool technology. Legos approach is both cool (as in 3D stuff magically appearing) and useful, you can get a so much better preview of what you are doing.

Now imagine if they made an application for your phone or computer, to make the building instructions in 3D. Cool and really neat when the instructions are hard to follow. You could even have them animated with no problem.

Amazons new iPhone app

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Amazon has done something fairly interesting, an iphone application. Which in itself isn’t that revolutionary. BUT they’ve added something extra (apart from being able to shop from your palm, keep track of your packages etc.), they provide a service called remembers. Which let you snap a picture and upload to the list. Neat for remembering cool things you’ve found for later shopping, extra neat when the amazon employees searches for the same or a similar product and suggests it to you.

You need an US itunes account to download it (google can help you out there), but it doesn’t seem tied to US only (I will try later).
