Installing OS X without being booted from the DVD

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I needed to install os x on a new drive (I’m replacing my 250GB drive with a 500GB one). Not wanting to be without the computer during the entire install process, I dug around in the install disc for the actual installer package. And sure enough, works perfectly fine.

So to do this, I just

  • popped my new drive into a SATA enclosure/dock
  • ran open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/ in a terminal window
  • Doubleclicked OSInstall.mpkg
  • Followed the installer

The Problem With Sony, In a Picture

Sony headphones

Pretty much sums it up I guess.

Guess how many designs apple does? It’s two; one regular ear bud and one in-ear monitor (haven’t checked my facts, but I’m pretty sure of this).

whatthefont_for_iphone

I have big news! What heFont, the ingenious font recognition app that I use on a regular basis is now available for the iPhone.
With the iPhone version of WhatTheFont you can use the phone’s built-in camera to photograph the text in question (or choose an existing image from your photo albums). The app allows you to crop the image, focusing on only the important parts before uploading. After confirming which characters are used in the image, the app provides a list of possible matching fonts. You can then either e-mail a link to a MyFonts page with more info on that font, or open it up in the iPhone’s built-in Safari web browser.

Get it from the App Store.

Amazons new iPhone app

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Amazon has done something fairly interesting, an iphone application. Which in itself isn’t that revolutionary. BUT they’ve added something extra (apart from being able to shop from your palm, keep track of your packages etc.), they provide a service called remembers. Which let you snap a picture and upload to the list. Neat for remembering cool things you’ve found for later shopping, extra neat when the amazon employees searches for the same or a similar product and suggests it to you.

You need an US itunes account to download it (google can help you out there), but it doesn’t seem tied to US only (I will try later).
